Old Injuries Meet Aging Bones
Old injuries are causing problems with my bones as they age
Strong muscles and ligaments support the bones better and improve the situation immensely. Using this roller at home helps stretch, massage and relax my muscles after exercise almost as well as with the physical therapist (PT). This allows me to help myself on my schedule and budget.
This roller is shorter and firmer than the one used with PT but suits me well. The video is worth a shot, just take your time. I’m 5’2″ 130# and it works for me but I can see how others would like the roller to be longer. The color is the same as my Gaiam yoga stuff, so it blends with the rest of my “in-home items of torture” as my son calls them For me, it’s a worthwhile addition to in-home exercise goodies at a reasonable price.
I had been asked to lie down lengthwise on one of these years ago in physical therapy and I hated it! Then recently a new physical therapist said just try it this way… I put it under my shoulder blades perpendicular to my spine and rolled up on it towards my neck and then back down. I do this several times. Make sure your hair is in a high ponytail or it will get caught when you roll up towards your neck.
I never thought this would not be painful but this is a great exercise, so I came to Amazon immediately to find one I could use at home. Not only did Amazon have this PURPLE one to match my purple exercise ball, but it was the shorter one. Perfect to fit under my shoulders and upper back. I’m a small woman, so I could imagine a much larger man or woman needing the longer one for the same purpose. But for me it’s great! And the cost, size, weight of it were all great too!
And it’s purple! If I’m going to have exercise equipment out, it may as well match!
Great just what I wanted for stretching after long runs
I really needed a good roller to help stretch after my long runs. This does the trick. Love it. the DVD has 2-12 minute video they move kinda fast but give you the exercises so you can do it on your own. Overall love this really can help stretch the thighs and back.
My massage therapist told me I need to be stretching everyday. Especially my back. Then she asked if I knew what a foam roller was. I told her I actually just ordered one and she was so excited. She says they are the best thing for stretching your back. And it is! I love it. Everybody should have one, not just for your back but also for your legs like he shows in the video. As an adjunct to this she also recommends tennis balls on your back up against the wall. Try it!
short roller, but great density
This roller has just the right density-not too hard and not too soft. Short and easy to work with on the floor. Purple might not be everyone’s color, but don’t let that dissuade you from getting it. Works really well for post-run ‘mashing’ and to stretch out my back after a long day at the computer.
Gives you a wonderful, relaxing massage and adds to some exercises
I got this mostly for exercising. But I soon discovered that it is perfect for a delightful massage for tired, sore muscles. I don’t know if all foam rollers are the same. I know some are longer. This is the 18″ roller. I got a DVD with mine. I bought it from drugstore.com so don’t know if the DVD comes with the one listed here or not. But the DVD is great and very helpful in showing you how to use the roller to full effect. I wish there were more instructions on the DVD, however. There are two very good exercises. Or, I should say massages.
If you’re looking for a foam roller, I highly recommend this one. It’s well made, nice looking and works great. As to the length to get, that’s up to you. I’m sure there are advantages to the longer one. It might be easier to work with. But either one is great for sore, tired muscles.

Being 52 and overweight I had a 7day trial at a local gym. They had a product very similar and I found that laying on it sideways it actually helped realign my lower back and hips. I rolled around on it not knowing exactly what to do but the relief of the muscles unwinding was so great that I actually went out and bought my own roller from Rebel Sports. The video was a great help giving me actual exercises to do and I enjoyed doing some of the harder stuff.
